As you set off from Spring City Resort, you can feel the mist, silence and grace of Peitou. This valley is surrounded by Mount Sha Mao, Da Tuen and Qi Xing. As it is located along the volcanic layers, sulphur smoke is emitted all year round. The native tribe Kaitagland took it that this is the holy place of the witches and translate this place as Ba Tou or Peitou in their native language.
The first Han people arrived during the Qing and Kang Dynasty led by Yu Yong He to pick sulphur at Peitou. The hot spring era started in 1896 when Japanese businessman Hirada invested in the Tian Gou Travel Lodge. The Lodge later became the nursing home for Japanese soldiers during wartime. During the Japanese Occupation, large amount of money was put into constructing the public hot spring bath at Peitou. From then on, hot spring accommodations spring up at enormous speed and Peitou become one of the most well known travel sights and leader in the hot spring areas in Taiwan.
Today, Peitou remains a simple town with century-old trees and low brick houses. As you explore the historical past along the stone path, your mind will be free and refresh. The humanities and nature of Peitou history welcomes your visit.
